These types of thefts are ?Crimes of Opportunity?.

The Brantford Police Service would like to take this opportunity to bring attention to this

crime in hopes of preventing any future similar incidents.

Leaving your car idling gives thieves a green light, wastes gas and

pollutes the environment.

Many of us leave the car running with the thought; it will be alright it?s only for a minute.

However leaving keys in the ignition in an unattended car whether at home or at the local

convenience store gives a thief the opportunity for a quick getaway.

Here are some crime prevention suggestions;

*NEVER leave your vehicle idling unattended

*Car auto starter ?allows you to start your car with a remote, but not drive away with it

*Steering wheel club ? locks your steering wheel if your keys are in the ignition

*Don?t run back into the house to finish your coffee! Make sure when you start your car

and run back into the house you stand in the doorway in close proximity watching your

car ? this may deter a would be opportunistic thief

*Lock your doors and windows and have a spare ignition key in your hand if you

choose not to remain in your car

**The best way to avoid this is to NEVER leave your vehicle idling unattended

Remember if your car is idling and the windows and doors are locked a car thief can still

steal your vehicle by smashing a window or ?jimmy? the lock.
